Radon Testing Kitchener/ Waterloo, ON

Radon is an invisible radioactive gas that causes lung cancer. Every region in Canada has homes with elevated radon; make sure yours isn’t one of them. Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Reducing radon in your home is straightforward.

What is Radon?
Radon is a gas. It is naturally occurring. It is inert and can not be seen or smelled. It enters buildings from the soil beneath them.

Where does it come from?
Radon comes from the radioactive decay of uranium 238. Radon comes from the immediate decay of radium 226. Much of the radon produced enters the atmosphere. The concern with radon is when it enters the home.

Why is Radon a Concern?
Radon decay products irradiate lungs before your lungs can expel them.

The EPA estimates that radon causes 21,000 deaths in the USA each year. The National Cancer Institute of Canada estimated deaths from lung cancer in 2006 as: 10,700 men and 8,600 women. In 10 per cent of these cases, radon would have caused the lung cancer. Total 1,930 in Canada each year.

It is the radon decay products that actually present the health risk associated with radon gas. The radon gas must break down in your lungs to cause the damage.
